Dainty– (adj) – डेन्टी – सुहावना / मनमोहक / लुभावना / स्वादिष्ट – Delectable / Pretty

• नंदिनी की मन-मोहक ड्रेस की सभी दोस्तों ने बहुत तारीफ की और इससे नंदिनी बहुत खुश हो गयी।
  Nandini’s dainty dress was appreciated by all, and it made Nandini very happy.
  
  
• गोलू के साथ अभय एक ढाबे पर गया और वहाँ बहुत ही स्वादिष्ट आलू और पनीर के पराठे खाने का लुत्फ़ उठाया।
  Golu, along with Abhay, went to a dhaba and enjoying eating very dainty Aloo and paneer parathas.

Dais (n.) – डायस – मंच – Podium / Stage

• शुभ को जब प्रथम पुरस्कार मिला तो उसने मंच पर जा कर अपने शिक्षक से वह पुरस्कार प्राप्त किया।
  When Shubh was awarded the first prize, then he went on to the dais and received the award from his teacher.
  
  
• जब ऋषि पहली बार सबके सामने मंच पर गाना गाने गया तो उसके हाथ पैर फूल गए और वह हताश होकर वापस लौट आया।
  When Rishi went on to the dais for the first time, he got nervous and then returned sadly.

Dangerous (adj.) – डेंजरस – असुरक्षित / भयंकर – Unsafe / Dreadful

• दोनों ओर रास्तों को देखे बिना सड़क पार करना असुरक्षित है।

Date (n.) – डेट – तारीख / खजूर –  Day / A fruit

• खजूर सेहत के लिए बहुत अच्छे हैं क्‍योंकि ये फाइबर से भरपूर होते हैं।
  Dates are very good for health because they are rich in fiber.

Daunt (vt.) – डॉन्ट – डराना – Intimidate / Terrify

• जब सुरेश युवराज के घर उसकी किताब मांगने गया तो उसके गेट पे खड़े कुत्ते को देख कर वह बहुत ज़्यादा डर गया और वापिस मुड़ गया।
  When Suresh went to Yuvraj’s house to ask for his book, he was daunted by the appearance of a dog at the gate and turned back.
  
  
• जीवन में हर बड़ा काम हमें बहुत मुश्किल और डरावना ही लगता है लेकिन अगर सफलता पानी है तो उस पर जीत हासिल करनी ही होगी।
  Every work in our life seems to be difficult and daunting, but if success is to be achieved, then one has to win over it.

Dawn (n.) – डॉन – सुबह /  शुरूआत – Morning / Beginning

• राहुल ने सुबह से शाम तक काम किया।
  Rahul worked from dawn to dusk.
  
  
• बिजली का आविष्कार एक नए युग की शुरूआत थी।
  The invention of electricity was the dawn of a new era.

Dazzle-(vt.) – डैज़ल – चकित कर देना / चौंका देना / हैरान कर देना – Astonish / Amaze

• जब लोगों ने गरीब बच्चे की गाने की प्रतिभा देखी तो सब चकित रह गए और उसकी बहुत प्रशंसा भी की।
  When people came to know about the singing talent of the poor child, they were dazzled by it and even appreciated him for it as well.
  
  
• जब मोहित ने देखा कि उसके घर में बंदर घुस आया है तो वह चकित हो गया और उसने अपने पड़ोसी को मदद के लिए फ़ौरन बुलाया।
  When Mohit saw that a monkey had entered his house, he got dazzled by it and immediately called his neighbour for help.

Dazzling (Adj.) – डैज़लिंग – चकाचौंध कर देने वाला – Shining, Bright

• चकाचौंध कर देने वाली लाइट ऐसा कर देती है कि थोड़ी देर के लिए कुछ दिखता नहीं है ।
  A dazzling light makes one’s eyes unable to see for a while.

Dear (n. & adj.) – डियर – प्रिय / महंगा –  Beloved / Expensive 

• मेरा देश भारत मुझे बहुत प्रिय है।

• खाना स्‍वादिष्‍ट था लेकिन बहुत ही महंगा था।
  The food was tasty but very much dear.

Dearth (n.) – डर्थ – कमी / अकाल / अभाव – Scarcity / Starvation

• दुनिया के कई हिस्सों में बारिश न होने और पेड़ो के कटने से पीने के पानी का अभाव हो गया है।
  Due to less rainfall and deforestation in many parts of the globe, there has been a dearth of drinking water.
  
  
• विशाल की बहुत प्रशंसा हो रही है क्योंकि गरीबी और पैसों के अभाव में रहने पर भी वह देश के इतने बड़े इग्ज़ैम में अव्वल आया।
  Vishal is being widely appreciated because despite facing poverty and dearth of money, he managed to top one of the most prestigious exams of the country.

Debase– (vt.) – डीबेस – कम करना / कटौती करना – Depreciate / Deteriorate

• अगर खेल को खेल-भावना से न खेलकर ईर्ष्या की भावना से खेला जाए तो वह खेल की गरिमा को कम कर देता है।
  If a sport is played with a feeling of hatred instead of the sportsman spirit, then it debases the prestige of the game.
  
  
• नयी चीज़ों को सीखना या बढ़ावा देने का ये अर्थ बिलकुल नहीं है कि हम अपनी पुरानी संस्कृति और रीति रिवाज़ों के लिए इज़्ज़त कम कर देंगे ।
  Promoting and learning new things certainly doesn’t mean that we will debase the respect for our old traditions and culture.

Decay (vt.) – डीके – सड़ना / गलना – Decline / Waste

• खाने को गर्म करके ही फ्रिज में रखें नहीं तो उसके सड़ने गलने की सम्भावना होती है।
  Keep the food in the fridge after reheating; otherwise, there are chances of it getting decayed.
  
  
• खेतों में अधिक बारिश के कारण फल सड़ गए हैं जिससे किसानों को बहुत नुक़सान हुआ है।
  Due to heavy rainfall in the fields, the fruits have rotten/decayed because of which farmers have incurred a massive loss.

Decent (adj.) – डीसेन्ट – सभ्य / काफी अच्छा – Civilized / Fair

• कई लोगों को एक अच्छा जीवन जीने में मुश्किल हो रही है।
  Many people are finding it hard to live a decent life.
  
  
• सर के पढ़ाने का तरीका काफी अच्छा है।
  Sir’s way of teaching is quite decent.

Deception-(n.) – डिसेप्शन – धोखा देना / छल / कपट – Disguise / Cheat

• अपने बैंक अकाउंट की जानकारी किसी के साथ साझा न करें बल्कि देख परख के काम करें नहीं तो बाजार में धोखा देने वाले कंपनियों की कमी नहीं है।
  Never share your bank account details with anyone, instead validate and authenticate as there is no shortage of deceiving companies in the market.
  
  
• आजकल इंटरनेट पर धोखाधड़ी के मामले बढ़ते ही जा रहे हैं इसलिए बहुत ही सावधानी के साथ हमें इसका इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए।
  Nowadays, deception cases on the internet are increasing; therefore, we should use it with the utmost precautions.

Decision (n.) – डिसीश़न – निर्णय / फैसला – Judgement / Verdict / Conclusion

• कभी-कभी जल्दी से निर्णय लेना महत्वपूर्ण होता है।
  Sometimes it is important to make a decision quickly.
  
  
• बहुत विचार-विमर्श करने के बाद सभी जज एक निष्कर्ष पर पहुंच गए।
  After much deliberation, all the judges reached on a decision.
  
  
• उच्‍चतम न्‍यायालय के जज का फैसला अंतिम होता है।
  The decision of the Supreme court judge is ultimate.
  
  
• मैं धूम्रपान छोड़ने के आपके निर्णय की सराहना करता हूँ।
  I applaud your decision to quit smoking.

Dedicate (vt.) – डेडिकेट – समर्पित करना – Devote

• विराट ने अपनी पूरी ज़िंदगी क्रिकेट को समर्पित कर दी, तब जाकर आज वह इतना बड़ा खिलाड़ी बना है।
  Virat dedicated his entire life to cricket, after that he has been able to become such a great player.
  
  
• कई संगीतकार अपने गाने और फिल्में शहीदों को समर्पित कर देते हैं जिन्होंने देश के लिए अपने जान की कुर्बानी दे दी।
  Many singers dedicate their songs and movies to the martyrs who lost their lives for the nation.

Dedication (n.) – डेडिकेशन – किसी काम के प्रति लगन – Devotion / Rendering

• राधा ने बड़ी मेहनत और लगन के साथ अपने ऑफ़िस में काम किया और उसे प्रमोशन भी मिल गया।
  Radhe worked with utmost dedication and diligence in her office and she also got the promotion.
  
  
• लगन और मेहनत से कोई भी इंसान के लिए किसी भी प्रकार का मुश्किल से मुश्किल काम करना संभव है।
  With hard – work and dedication it is possible for any person to do even the most difficult tasks of any kind.

Defamatory (adj.) – डिफेमेटरी – अपमानजनक – Calumnious, Vilifying

• अपमानजनक टिप्पणियों को बर्दाश्त नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।
  Defamatory comments must not be tolerated.
  
  
• किसी भी व्यक्ति के बारे में अपमानजनक बयान न करने का ध्यान रखें।
  Take care of not making defamatory statements about any person.

Defect (n. & v.) – डिफैक्ट – दोष / रुख करना – Deformity / To shift

• श्रवण दोष एक शारीरिक नुक्स है जिसे आसानी से ठीक नहीं किया जा सकता।
  Hearing defect is a physical flaw that cannot be cured easily.
  
  
• रिपोर्टर आशुतोष ने अपने बेहतर भविष्‍य के लिए दूसरे टीवी नेटवर्क की ओर रुख किया।
  The reporter Ashutosh defected to another TV network for his better future.

Defend (vt.) – डिफेंड – रक्षा करना / बचाव करना – Safeguard / Protect

• भारतीय सेना हमें पड़ोसी मुल्क से और सभी प्रकार के देश के दुश्मनों से लोगों की रक्षा करती है।
  The Indian Army defends the people from the neighbouring countries and all kinds of enemies of the country.
  
  
• आज के समय में जिस तरह से महिलाओं के खिलाफ हिंसा हो रही है उससे तो लड़कियों को खुद के बचाव के लिए ट्रेनिंग लेनी चाहिए।
  The way violence against women is increasing nowadays, it seems that girls should get trained on how to defend themselves.

Deference (n.) – डेफेरेंस – नम्रता / सदाचारी होना / इज़्ज़त करना – Respect / Regard

• मेले में लोगों की भारी भीड़ थी लेकिन जब मैंने एक बुज़ुर्ग को खड़े हुए देखा तो मैंने नम्रतापूर्वक उन्हें अपनी कुर्सी दे दी।
  The fair was too crowded, but when I saw an elderly standing, I handed my chair to him with deference.
  
  
• जीवन को अगर घमंड के साथ चलोगे तो कुछ नहीं होगा बल्कि सदाचारी रहोगे तो लोगों की इज़्ज़त और सम्मान प्राप्त होगा।
  If we live life with arrogance, it’s good for nothing; instead treating others with deference will give you respect and honour from others.

Deficiency (n.) – डेफिशिएंसी – कमी – Lack / Shortage

• डॉक्टर ने प्रतीक को बोला कि उसे घुटने का दर्द इसलिए है क्योंकि उसके शरीर में विटामिन डी की कमी है।
  The doctor told Prateek that he has pain in his knee because there is a deficiency of Vitamin D in his body.
  
  
• हमें हर प्रकार की फल और सब्ज़ियाँ खानी चाहिए वरना कई प्रकार की बीमारियाँ पोषण देने वाले खाने की कमी से होती है।
  We should eat all fruits and vegetables; otherwise, many diseases arise due to deficiency of nutrient-rich foods.

Deficit (n.) – डेफिसिट – घाटा / कमी – Lack / Shortage

• बाजार में मंदी के कारण मोहन का कपड़ों का व्यापार घाटे में चल रहा है।
  Due to the recession in the market, Mohan’s fabric business is running under deficit.
  
  
• पहली पारी में बेहतरीन बल्लेबाज़ी के कारण ऑस्ट्रेलिया भारत से 200 रन पीछे है और मैच में बुरी हालत है।

Definitely (adv.) – डैफिनेट्ली – निश्‍चित रूप से / बेशक – Certainly / Undoubtedly

Deformity (n.) – डिफॉर्मिटी – कुरूपता – Abnormality / Mutilation

• राघवेंद्र को बचपन से ही पैरों में कुरूपता थी जिसके कारण वह ठीक से अपने पैरों पर खड़ा नहीं हो पाता था और चल भी नहीं पाता था।
  Raghvendra had a deformity in his legs since childhood because of which he couldn’t stand on his feet and couldn’t even walk.
  
  
• गाड़ी से हुए एक्सीडेंट के कारण सुमन के जबड़े ऐसे हिले कि वह कुरूपता का शिकार हो गयी।

Dejected (adj.) – डीजेक्टेड – उदास / हताश / निराश / दुखी – Disappointed / Sad

• अपने इंटरव्यू में फेल होने पर गोविंद बहुत निराश हो गया और पूरे दिन खाना भी नहीं खाया।
  After failing in the interview, Govind got dejected and didn’t have food the entire day.

Deliberate (adj. & v.) – डैलिबरेट – जानबूझकर / विचार-विमर्श करना – Intentional / To discuss

• पहले मुझे लगा कि रेशमा ने गलती से ऋतिक को बुरा -भला कहा होगा लेकिन बाद में मुझे पता लगा कि उसने ऐसा जान-बूझ कर किया था।
  At first, I thought Reshma must have spoken ill to Hrithik unintentionally, but later on, I came to know that she did that deliberately.
  
  
• किसी भी बड़े फैसले को लेने से पहले उसके पीछे मंथन और पूरे सोच विचार करने के बाद ही अपना निर्णय लेना चाहिए।
  Before making any significant decision, there should be severe thinking and deliberation; only after that, the decision should be taken.
  
  
• आस्‍ट्रेलियाई क्रिकेटर स्मिथ ने जानबूझकर गेंद से छेड़छाड़ की बात स्वीकार की।

• आप जानबूझकर उसे चोट पहुँचाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।

• मैं जानबूझकर उसकी अनदेखी कर रहा था।
  I was deliberately ignoring him.

Delicacy (n.) – डेलिकेसी – नाज़ुकता / सूक्ष्मता – Tenderness / Gentleness

• जिस तरीके से एक कुम्हार नाज़ुकता के साथ अपने हाथों से घड़े को आकार देता है उसी प्रकार हमारे दोस्त हमारे जीवन को एक आकर देते हैं।
  How a potter gives shape to a pot with such delicacy from his hands, in a similar way, our friends shape our lives.
  
  
• मैं पांच सितारा होटल में जब गया तो मैंने ऐसे लज़ीज़ पकवान देखे जो मैंने जीवन में कभी भी नहीं देखे थे।
  When I went to a five-star hotel, then I saw such sumptuous delicacies that I had never seen in my entire life.

Delusion-(n.) – डिल्यूज़न – भ्रम – Fallacy / llusio

• वह इस भ्रम में जी रहा है कि वह ऐसा इंसान बन जायेगा जिससे कभी गलती हो ही न जबकि ये असंभव है।
  He is living in such a delusion that he will go on to become such a human who won’t make any mistakes, but it’s impossible.
  
  
• कई बार ऐसा हमारे साथ होता है कि हमें लगता है कि ज़िंदगी में पैसा ही सब कुछ है लेकिन सच्चाई बाद में ही समझ आती है कि यह सब तो बस एक भ्रम था ।
  Many times it happens with us that we feel like money is everything in life, but the truth is understood later that it was just a delusion.

Demarcation (n.) – डिमार्केशन – हद / मर्यादा / सीमा – Partition / Delimitation

• भारत में किसी भी युवा को वोट देने की सबसे काम उम्र या समय सीमा जो है वो 18 साल है, चाहे वह लड़का हो या लड़की।
  The age to vote in India is demarcated at the age of 18 years, whether it is a girl or a boy.
  
  
• हमें अपनी खर्च करने की सीमा पता होनी चाहिए नहीं तो इंसान लालच और चीज़ों के आकर्षण में खुद को खो बैठेगा।
  We should know the demarcation of our expenditure, or else a person will lose himself in greed and attraction of objects.

Demean-(vt.) – डीमीन – नीचा दिखाना / बेइज़्ज़त करना – Defame / Disrespect

• जब संतोष की उसके सामने वाले व्यापारी से झड़प हुई तो उसने झूठा आरोप लगा के उसे नीचा दिखने की कोशिश की।
  When Santosh had an argument with the vendor who has his shop in front of him, Santosh made false allegations to demean him.
  
  
• हमें कभी भी किसी व्यक्ति को उसका अपमान करने के लिए भला – बुरा कह कर उसे कभी भी नीचा नहीं दिखाना चाहिए।
  We should never speak ill to someone and demean him.

Demise (n.) – डिमाइस – मृत्यु / अवसान – Death / Failure

• आपके भाई के आकस्मिक निधन ने सभी को स्तब्ध कर दिया।
  The sudden demise of your brother left everyone shocked.
  
  
• नासा ने ऑपरच्यूनिटी रोवर मिशन के अवसान की घोषणा की।
  NASA announced the demise of the Opportunity Rover’s Mission.

Democracy-(n.) – डेमोक्रेसी – लोकतंत्र / जनता या लोगों के द्वारा चुनी हुई सत्ता या सरकार

• भारत विश्व का सबसे बड़ा लोकताँत्रिक देश है जिसके प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र दामोदरदास मोदी है।
  India is the largest democratic country whose Prime Minister is Mr. Narendra DamodarDas Modi.
  
  
• एक लोकताँत्रिक देश की सबसे बड़ी ताकत उस देश की जनता होती है क्योंकि सारी शक्तियाँ लोगों के पास ही रहती हैं।
  The biggest strength of a democratic country is its population because all the power rests with the people.

Demolish (v.) – डिमौलिश – तबाह कर देना, धराशायी करना – To destroy

• बुलडोजर ने 1 घंटे में पूरी बिल्डिंग को धराशायी कर दिया।
  The bulldozer demolished the whole building within an hour.
  
  
• नयी फैक्ट्री बनाने के लिए उसकी पुरानी फैक्ट्री को तोड़ दिया गया।
  His old factory was demolished so as to build a new one.

Demonstration-(n.) – डेमंस्ट्रेशन – साबित करना / साबित करके दिखने वाला – Show

• जब मेरी नयी वाशिंग मशीन आयी तो उसे चलना कैसे है, ये बताने के लिए कंपनी ने एक आदमी भेजा जो उसे चल के दिखायेगा।
  When my new washing machine came, then how it was to be operated, for that the company sent a person to show me the demonstration on how to operate it.
  
  
• जब रणजीत के ऊपर मार पीट का आरोप लगा, तो उसे अपनी बेक़सूरी दिखाने के लिए कोर्ट में खुद को बेगुनाह साबित करना पड़ा।
  When Ranjeet faced an allegation of a brawl on him, he had to demonstrate his innocence in the court.

Denial (n.) – डिनायल – अस्वीकृत / स्वीकृत न होना / मना होना – Refusal / Rejection

• कोरोना वायरस के समय घर से बिना मास्क और ग्लव्स पहने निकलना गलत है और किसी को भी स्वीकृत नहीं है।
  Going out without wearing masks and gloves during the time of Corona is a strict denial by all.
  
  
• प्रज्ञा को भूखे मरना स्वीकार है लेकिन किसी से मदद माँगकर उस पर निर्भर रहने से उसका साफ़ इंकार है।
  Dying by hunger is acceptable to Pragya, but depending on someone by asking them for help is a denial by her.

Deny (vt.) – डिनाय – मना करना / इनकार करना / खंडन करना – Refuse / Refute

• जब मोहिनी ने अपने पिताजी से स्कूल के बाद बाहर घूमने के लिए पूछा तो उन्होंने साफ़ मना कर दिया क्योंकि बाहर बहुत गर्मी थी।
  When Mohini asked his father about going out to have fun after the school, she was denied by her father as it was scorching outside.
  
  
• हमारे माता – पिता हमें हर गलत चीज़ को करने, सुनने या देखने से साफ़ मना करते हैं जिससे हम गलत संगति में न पड़ें।
  Our parents deny us to do, listen, or see anything wrong very strictly as it might lead us to a lousy company.
  
  
• राहुल ने नेहा के बारे में कुछ भी बताने से इनकार कर दिया।
  Rahul denied revealing anything about Neha.
  
  
• नेता जी ने तुरंत सभी आरोपों का खंडन कर दिया।
  Neta ji immediately denied all the allegations.

Dependant-(n.) – डिपेंडेंट – निर्भर होना – Precarious

• आरव घर का अकेला सदस्य है जो कमाता है और उसके भाई बहन और उसके माता- पिता उसके ऊपर ही पूरी तरह से निर्भर हैं।
  Aarav is the only person in the house who earns, and his siblings and parents are totally dependant on him.
  
  
• सऊदी अरबिया और कई अरब देश अपनी पूरी कमाई और अर्थव्यवस्था के लिए हर तरीके से तेल और उससे जुड़े उत्पादों के ऊपर निर्भर हैं।
  Saudi Arabia and many other Arabic countries are dependants on their oil production and related products in terms of capital and economy.

Depict (vt.) – डेपिक्ट – वर्णन करना – Represent / Describe

• प्रेमचंद ने अपनी किताबों में आम लोगों की ज़िंदगी और उनकी परेशानियों का बड़े ही खूबसूरती से वर्णन किया है।
  Premchand has depicted the ordinary peoples’ lives and their problems very beautifully in his novels.
  
  
• इस किताब में विज्ञान के एक विषय का इतने अच्छे से वर्णन किया गया है कि अनपढ़ आदमी भी देख के कुछ न कुछ तो ज़रूर सीख ही लेगा।
  Some of the topics of science have been depicted in this book so well that even an illiterate person will gain some knowledge after reading it.

Deplete (vt.) – डिप्लीट – खाली करना / काम करना / व्यय करना – Deplenish / Spend

• लोग जिस तरह से पानी को बिना सोचे समझे व्यर्थ कर रहे हैं उससे ज़मीन के नीचे पानी की मात्रा कम हो रही है जिससे भविष्य में परेशानियां खड़ी हो सकती हैं।
  How people are wasting water without even giving a second thought, and due to that the water level below the ground is getting depleted, which can lead to a lot of trouble in the future.
  
  
• पेड़ पौधे काटना और हर प्रकार से इस प्रकृति को नष्ट करने के कारण कई सारे प्राकृतिक संसाधन धीरे – धीरे इस धरती से लुप्त होते जा रहे हैं।
  Cutting trees and destroying nature in all sorts of ways is the reason that many natural resources are getting depleted gradually from the earth.

Deprive (vt.) – डिप्राइव – वंचित करना / छीन लेना – Bereave / Dispossess

Divine (adj.) – डिवाईन – पवित्र / दिव्य / अद्भुत – Heavenly

• कहते हैं श्री कृष्णा ने अपनी अद्भुत शक्तियों से धरती पर सारे असुर, राक्षस और दानवों का विनाश कर, धरती को पाप मुक्त बनाया था।
  It is said that Lord Krishna, with his divine powers, destroyed all the monsters and evil forces to make earth free of sins.
  
  
• माँ की ममता और प्यार की तुलना किसी से नहीं की जा सकती और उनके आशीर्वाद लेने से एक दिव्य अनुभूति प्राप्त होती ह।
  Mother’s love and affection can never be compared to any other thing in the world, and her taking her blessings gives us a divine experience.

Divulge (vt.) – डाइवल्ज –  कोई राज़ खोल देना  – Unfold / Publish / Reveal

• जब गोलू एक बात अपनी दीदी से छुपा रहा था तो उसकी दीदी ने उसे चॉकलेट का लालच दे कर उससे राज़ उगलवा लिया।
  When Golu was trying to conceal something from her elder sister, her sister lured her with chocolate, and got the secret divulged.
  
  
• देश से जुड़ी कोई गोपनीय बात हमें पड़ोसी मुल्क के किसी भी व्यक्ति को नहीं बतानी चाहिए, वो देश हित में नहीं होगा।
  Something related to the welfare / well – being of the country must not be divulged to the citizens of a neighboring country as it will be against the nation’s harmony.

Doctrine (n.) – डॉक्ट्रिन – सिद्धांत – Principle / Law

• रसिक के पिताजी सिद्धांत के बहुत पक्के हैं और इसलिए अपने दुकान पर सामान बेचते वक़्त, वह कभी भी किसी भी ग्राहक से बेईमानी नहीं करते हैं।
  Rasik’s father follows the doctrine strictly, and that’s why while selling things at his shop, he doesn’t cheat with any of the customers.
  
  
• जब अँग्रेज़ भारत आये थे तो उन्होंने राज्य हड़पने के लिए कई तरीके निकाले थे, जिनमे से एक था व्यपगत का सिद्धांत जिसमे कि बिना वारिस के राजा से उसका सिंहासन छीन लिया जाता था।
  When the English came to India, they launched various ways of capturing the states, one of which was the doctrine of a lapse in which a king/ruler who didn’t have an heir was forcefully made to handover their kingdom.

Dogma-(n.) – डॉग्मा – सिद्धांत – Orientation / Ideology

• किसी संस्थान के कुछ सिद्धांत होते हैं और जब हम उस संस्थान से जुड़ते हैं, तो हमसे यह उम्मीद की जाती है कि हम उन सभी का पालन करेंगे।
  Any organisation has its own set of dogma and when we connect with those organisations, then it is expected from us that we will abide by them.
  
  
• जोन्स चर्च में बोले गए हर सिद्धांत और बाइबल की हर सीख को अपने जीवन में लाना चाहता है और एक सफल इंसान बनना चाहता है।
  Jones wants to learn every dogma of the Bible, spoken out in the Church, and implement it in his life and become a successful person.

Dogmatic– (adj.) – डॉग्मैटिक – सैद्धांतिक / हठी – Doctrinist

• अगर आप नयी पीढ़ी से पूछेंगे तो यह पाएंगे कि वह सैद्धांतिक से ज़्यादा वैज्ञानिक तरीके से काम करने में ज़्यादा विश्वास रखती है।
  If you ask the new generation, then you will find that they believe in working with a more scientific approach rather than a dogmatic way.
  
  
• श्रद्धा होना अच्छी बात है लेकिन धर्म के नाम पर सैद्धांतिक बन कर, कुछ भी सोचना या बोलना बहुत ही गलत है।
  Having faith is good, but being dogmatic and speaking whatever it feels like in the name of religion is very wrong.

Dominate (v.) – डॉमिनेट –  हावी होना / वर्चस्व रखना – To control / To influence

• वह अपने परिवार पर हावी रहता है और खुद सभी निर्णय लेता है।
  He dominates his family and makes all the decisions himself.
  
  
• स्पोकन इंग्लिश गुरू ब्रैन्ड की बुक्स आज भी पुस्‍तक-विक्रय बाजार पर अपना वर्चस्‍व बनाए हुए है।
  The books of Spoken English Guru brand continue to dominate the book-selling market even today.
  
  
• भारतीय बाज़ार में आज भी चीनी कंपनियों का दबदबा कायम है।
  Chinese companies continue to dominate the Indian market even today.

Dormant (adj.) – डॉर्मेंट – सुस्त / निष्क्रिय – Inactive / Passive

• जब शिवदीप लांडे पटना के एसपी बने, तब जाकर पिछले कई सालों से निष्क्रिय पुलिस विभाग होश में आया और सामाजिक बुराई को मिटाने में जुट गया।
  When Shivdeep Lande became the S.P of Patna, the police department, which has been dormant for years, came into action and initiated the movement to remove anti-social elements.
  
  
• कोरोना वायरस के कारण पूरे दुनिया भर के कारोबार और कारखाने निष्क्रिय हो चुके हैं जिससे वैश्विक व्यापार को बहुत नुक़सान हो रहा है।
  Due to the CoronaVirus, the industry and business all over the world have become dormant, and world business is facing a huge loss.

Drain (vt.) – ड्रेन – निकालना / नाली / कमज़ोर महसूस करना – Sewer / To outlet / Exit

• किसी भी घर या सोसाइटी को बनाने के दौरान, जो सबसे बड़ी मुश्किल चुनौती रहती है वो वहाँ से बारिश के दौरान पानी निकलने की व्यवस्था रहती है।
  During the construction of a house or a society, the biggest challenge always remains regarding how the water will be drained during the rains.
  
  
• जब मैं पूरा दिन ऑफ़िस में मेहनत कर के थका – हारा घर लौटता हूँ तो बहुत ही ज़्यादा थकान और कमज़ोरी महसूस होती है।
  When I return home from the office after working for so long, I feel so tired and drained out.
  
  
• हमें नालियों को नियमित रूप से साफ करना चाहिए।
  We should make the drains clean on a regular basis.
  
  
• पाइप को साफ करने से पहले आपको गंदे पानी को बाहर निकालना होगा।
  You must drain the dirty water out before cleaning the pipe.

Drastic (adj.) – ड्रास्टिक – सख्त / प्रचंड / भीषण – Strong / Rigorous

• जब तन्मय अपने माँ की बात नहीं सुन रहा था और बिना पूछे सारे काम करता था तब उसकी माँ को उसके खिलाफ काफी सख्त कदम उठाना पड़ा।
  When Tanmay wasn’t listening to his mom and didn’t take permission from her for doing any work, then her mother decided to take a drastic step against him.
  
  
• जब ओजस जैसलमेर अपने मामा के साथ रेगिस्तान घूमने गया, तो उसे धूपऔर गर्मी का सामना करना पड़ा जो कि मौसम में भरी बदलाव के कारण आया था।
  When Ojas went to visit the desert in Jaisalmer along with mama, he faced scorching sun and heat, which was a result of drastic changes in the weather.

Drawback (n.) – ड्राबैक – कमी – Demerit / Disadvantage

• यह शर्ट दिखने में तो बहुत ही अच्छी है लेकिन इसकी कमी यही है कि इसके कपड़े की क्वालिटी इतनी ख़राब है कि शरीर पर ज़ख्म हो रहे हैं।
  This shirt looks good, but there is one drawback in it: the quality of the material used in the cloth is so bad that there have been infections on the body.
  
  
• बड़े शहर में रहने के फायदे तो हैं लेकिन सबसे बड़ा नुक्सान है कि भीड़ का सामना करना पड़ता है, उसके साथ – साथ प्रदूषण की भी दिक्कत आती है।
  There are a lot of advantages of living in big cities, but the biggest drawback is that we have to face huge crowds, along with those problems due to pollution.

Dread (n.)(vt.) – ड्रेड – भय / डर – Fear / Scare

• जब से कोरोना वायरस ने पूरी दुनिया को तबाह किया है, तब से मानो घर से बाहर निकलने में भी बहुत ही ज़्यादा डर लगता है।
  Since the time the Corona Virus has destroyed the world, it seems dreadful to even step out of the house.
  
  
• बचपन में मार – पिटाई के कारण माधव के मन में एक डर बैठ गया जिसके कारण अब बड़ा होने पर भी अपने पापा से कुछ भी कहने में घबराता है।
  The physical punishments in childhood had a dreadful impact on Madhav’s mind, and this has made him hesitant with his father even after he is a grown up.

Drench (vt.) – ड्रेन्च – भिगोना – To make wet / Damp

• मैं एक दिन बिना छतरी के रोड पर निकल गया और अचानक से बहुत तेज़ बारिश होने लगी जिससे मैं बुरी तरह भीग गया।
  I went on the streets without the umbrella, and all of a sudden, it started raining, and I got utterly drenched.
  
  
• मिथिला की माँ ने उसे बताया कि दाल या चावल बनाने के लिए उसे पानी में भीगा के डालते हैं जिससे वह कुकर में अच्छे से पक जाए।
  Mithila’s mother told her that, to cook rice or pulse, we have to get it drenched with water so that it gets cooked in the cooker quickly.

Drop (n. & v.) – ड्रॉप – बूंद / छोड़ना –  Blob / To transport

• पानी की हर एक बूंद उपयोगी है, कृपया इसे बरबाद न करें।
  Every single drop of water is useful, please don’t waste it.
  
  
• क्या आप कृपा करके मुझे अपनी कार से बस स्टेशन तक छोड़ सकते हैं?
  Can you please drop me to the bus station in your car?

Drowsy (adj) – ड्रॉउज़ी – नींद से भरा हुआ – Sluggish / Lethargic / Lazy

• जब कार्तिक पूरी रात जाग कर फ़ोन चलाता रहा और फिर सुबह कॉलेज आया तो क्लास में पढ़ने के दौरान, वह नींद से भरा हुआ था।
  When Kartik was awake and used his phone the entire night and then came to college in the morning, during the class while studying, he was feeling drowsy.
  
  
• छोटे बच्चों को कितना भी सुला दो लेकिन थोड़े देर खेलने – कूदने के बाद भी ऐसा लगता है, वह बहुत ही ज़्यादा नींद से भरे हुए हैं।
  However, long one may tell the kids to sleep, but just some time after they play and hop around, it seems they are drowsy.

Duck (n. & v.) – डक – बत्तख / झुकाना – A water bird / To bend down

• बत्तख जलीय पक्षी हैं जो पानी पर या उसके आसपास रहते हैं।
  Ducks are aquatic birds that live on or around water.
  
  
• छत इतनी नीची थी कि आगंतुक को अपना सिर झुकाना पड़ा।
  The ceiling was so low that the visitor had to duck his head.

Dull (adj.) – डल – बहुत उबाऊ / सुस्त –  Boring/Tedious /lacking interest

• पुस्तक इतनी नीरस थी कि मैंने उसे पूरा नहीं किया।
  The book was so dull that I didn’t finish it.
  
  
• लंबे व्याख्यान ने कक्षा को सुस्त बना दिया।
  The long lecture made the afternoon/ class dull.
  
  
• हम घंटों बात कर सकते हैं और यह कभी सुस्त नहीं पड़ता।
  We can talk for hours and it never gets dull.
  
  
• मेरा काम सुस्त और उबाऊ है।
  My job is dull and boring.

Duly (adv.) – ड्यूली – यथायोग्य / उचित – Reasonably

• वकील ने रमन को कानूनी कागज़ पकड़ाते हुए, उससे कहा कि जहाँ – जहाँ उसका नाम है, वहाँ उचित रूप से हस्ताक्षर कर दें।
  The lawyer, while handling the legal document to Raman, said that she has to sign on the apt places accordingly.
  
  
• अगर कोई आदमी मेहनत और पूरी लगन से कोई काम करता है तो उसका यह सोचना उचित है कि उसे तारीफ मिलेगी।
  If a person does work with diligence and dedication, then he is right if he thinks he should get the credit duly.

Duplicate (v. & n.) – डुप्लिकेट – नकल करना / अनुलिपि – To copy / Photocopy

• बिना अनुमति के प्रकाशित सामग्री की नकल करना अवैध है।
  Duplicating published material without permission is illegal.

• हम दस्तावेजों को वापस नहीं कर पाएंगे, इसलिए अपने साथ इनकी अनुलिपि रख लें।
  We will not be able to return the documents, so keep their duplicates with you.

Durable (adj.) – ड्यूरेबल – टिकाऊ – Lasting / Enduring

• अक्सर ऐसा देखा गया है कि ज़्यादातर जो चीज़ें कुछ ज़्यादा ही सस्ती होती हैं वो अक्सर टिकाऊ नहीं होती हैं और बहुत जल्दी ख़राब होती हैं।
  It is often seen that most of the things which are somewhat very cheap are often not durable and get damaged / spoiled easily.
  
  
• मुझे ऐसा फ़ोन ख़रीदना है जो ज़्यादा लंबा चले और टिकाऊ हो, न कि एक दो साल में ही काम करना बंद कर दे।
  I want to buy such a phone which lasts long and is durable; it shouldn’t be like it stops working in a year or two.

Dusk (n.) – डस्क – धुल / अँधेरा / शाम – Darkness / Sunset / Twilight

• बच्चों को अंधेरा होने से पहले घर आने की हिदायत दी जाती है क्योंकि उसके बाद उनका बाहर अकेले खेलना थोड़ा सुरक्षित नहीं है।
  Children are advised to come back home before dusk because  after that, it’s not safe for them to play alone.
  
  
• सम्राट नॉर्वे में रहता है, एक दिन बात करते समय वह बता रहा था कि वहाँ की शाम बहुत ही ज़्यादा सुन्दर होती है और उसे देखने लोग दूर – दूर से वहाँ आते हैं।
  Samrat lives in Norway; one day, while talking to me, he told me that the dusk is just incredible there, and people from far away places come to watch it.

Dwell (vt.) – ड्वेल – बसना / रहना – Abide / Settle / Reside

• पलक का जन्म अमेरिका में हुआ था लेकिन उसके बाद उसके माँ बाप भारत आ गए और यहीं पिछले दस साल से रह रहे हैं।
  Palak was born in the United States, but after that, her parents came to India, and they have been dwelling here for the last ten years.
  
  
• तुम उत्तर भारत में जन्मे और रहे हो इसलिए चेन्नई में बसना और यहाँ के माहौल में खुद को ढालने में तुम्हें अभी थोड़ा और समय लगेगा।
  You are born in Northern India, and that’s why in Chennai, it would take some amount of time for you to adjust and dwell in the ambiance here.

Dwelling (n.) – ड्वेलिंग – घर / मकान / बसेरा – Abode / Residance

• रमेश के पिताजी ने उनका पुश्तैनी घर बनते हुए देखा था जब उसके पिताजी के दादाजी ने वह घर बनाने के लिए उसकी नींव रखी थी।
  Ramesh’s father saw his ancestral house being built when his grandpa laid the foundation of the dwelling.
  
  
• अभिनव ने नोएडा में दो करोड़ का घर लिया है और कल हमें उसी के गृह प्रवेश के लिए सह परिवार आमंत्रित किया है।
  Abhinav has bought a dwelling in Gurgaon for two crores, and tomorrow he has  invited us to the housewarming ceremony, with family
