Parts of Speech Overview
When we start learning English, one of the first topics we study is parts of speech. These are groups that words belong to, based on how they are used in a sentence. Some words can belong to more than one group.
In every English sentence, each word fits into one of these groups. There are eight main parts of speech in English. In this guide, we will explain all eight parts of speech with clear examples to help you understand them better.
Now that you know the basic idea of parts of speech, letโs explore each one in detail.

Parts of Speech with Examples
The English language has eight types of parts of speech: Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.
Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns can act as the subject of a sentence (the one doing the action) or the object (the one affected by the action).
Types of nouns include:
- Common nouns (general names for people, places, or things)
- Proper nouns (specific names for people, places, or things)
- Collective nouns (words for groups of people or things)
Examples:
- The teacher explained the topic.
- We visited London.
- The team won the match.
Pronouns
Pronouns are words used in place of nouns to make sentences clear and avoid repeating the same nouns.
Types of pronouns include:
- Personal pronouns (e.g., I, you, he, she, it)
- Demonstrative pronouns (e.g., this, that, these, those)
- Interrogative pronouns (e.g., who, what, which)
Examples:
- He went to the market.
- This is my book.
- Who called you yesterday?
Verbs
A verb shows an action, an event, or a state of being. Verbs tell what the subject of a sentence does or experiences. Every sentence must have at least one verb.
Verbs can be:
- Regular (form past tense by adding โ-edโ)
- Irregular (form past tense in different ways)
Examples:
- She plays the guitar.
- We walked to school yesterday.
- They built a house last year.
Adjectives
An adjective describes or gives more information about a noun or pronoun. Adjectives tell us more about the qualities, quantity, or type of the noun.
Examples:
- The road is long.
- He gave me five apples.
- This is a difficult question.
Adverbs
An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs explain how, when, where, or to what extent an action happens.
Examples:
- She speaks clearly.
- He arrived early.
- They worked very hard.

Examples:
- The book is on the table.
- We will meet at noon.
- He walked into the room.
Conjunctions
A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.
Types of conjunctions:
- Coordinating conjunctions (e.g., and, but, or)
- Subordinating conjunctions (e.g., because, if, while)
- Correlative conjunctions (e.g., either…or, neither…nor)
Examples:
- She likes coffee and tea.
- He stayed home because it was raining.
- We can either go for a walk or watch a movie.
Interjections
An interjection is a word or phrase used to express a feeling or to grab attention. It is not grammatically connected to the sentence.
Examples:
- Wow! Thatโs amazing.
- Oops! I dropped my pen.
- Hey! Stop right there.
