Bachelor (n.) – बैचलर – अविवाहित / स्नातक – Unmarried / Graduate

अब्दुल कलाम पूरी ज़िंदगी अविवाहित रहे।
Abdul Kalam remained a bachelor all his life.
आईएएस की परीक्षा में शामिल होने के लिए कम से कम स्नातक की डिग्री होनी चाहिए।
One must have at least a bachelor’s degree to appear in the IAS exam.

Backbite – बैकबाइट – चुगली करना / पीठे पीछे निंदा करना – Criticize / Disrepute

वो चुगली करता रहता है, इसीलिए मैं उससे बात करने से बचता हूँ।
He keeps backbiting, that’s why I avoid talking to him.
हमें पीठ पीछे निंदा नहीं करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि यह हमारी नकारात्मकता को प्रदर्शित करता है।
We shouldn’t backbite, as it exhibits our negativity.

Balance (n.) – बैलैन्स – संतुलन / तराज़ू – Stability / Scale

साइकिल चालक अपना संतुलन खो बैठा और अपनी साइकिल से गिर गया।
The cyclist lost his balance and fell off his bicycle.
हमें हमेशा आईएसआई मार्क तराज़ू खरीदना चाहिए।
We should always buy ISI marked balance.

Bandit (n.) – बैंडिट – डाकू – Robber / Mugger

पुराने समय में, जब पुलिस इतनी मुस्तैद नहीं होती थी तब डाकू आकर गाँव लूट कर चले जाते थे।
In earlier times, when police didn’t use to be that active, the bandits used to come to the village, loot it and then flee.
भारतीय महासागर में जा रहे जहाज़ को समुद्री डाकुओं ने कब्ज़े में ले लिया और सरकार से फिरौती मांगी।
The ship traveling in the Indian Ocean was made hostage by the sea bandits/pirates and then they demanded ransom from the government.

Bank (n.) – बैंक – बैंक/किनारा – A financial institution / Coast

उसके पास बैंक में कुछ पैसे हैं।
He has some money in the bank.
नदी के किनारे एक पेड़ उग रहा है।
A tree is growing on the bank of the river.

Bankrupt (n.) – बैंक्रप्ट – कंगाल / दिवालिया – Insolvent

जब व्यापार डूब जाता है तो अक्सर कंपनी दिवालिया हो जाती है और उसे भारी नुकसान पे बेचना पड़ता है।
When a business fails then usually the company gets bankrupt, and it has to be sold at a considerable loss.
कई देशों की सरकार दूसरे देशों से क़र्ज़ लेकर दिवालिया हो चुकी है और अर्थव्यवस्था भी ठप्प हो चुकी है।
Many countries have become bankrupt after taking loans from several other countries, and their economy has also become stagnant.

Bar (n.) – बार – शराब ख़ाना / बाधा – Public drinking house / Obstacle

उस होटल में एक लाइसेंस प्राप्त शराबख़ाना है।
There is a licensed bar in that hotel.
शिक्षा की कमी अमीर बनने में कोई बाधा नहीं है।
Lack of education is no bar to becoming rich.

Bark (v. & n.) – बार्क – भौंकना/छाल – To yelp/skin

कुत्ते अक्सर रात में ज़्यादा भौंका करते हैं।
The dogs often bark more at night.

किसी पेड़ की छाल से उसकी आयु का पता लगाया जाता है।
The age of a tree is determined by its bark.

Barrier – बैरियर – बाधा / रुकावट / अवरोध – Obstacle / Hindrance

इस पॉलिसी को लागू करके, उन्होंने सभी घुसपैठ के खिलाफ एक रूकावट पैदा की।
By applying this policy, they created a barrier against all intrusions.
यदि कोई अंतर्राष्ट्रीय भाषा नहीं होती, तो हम अन्य देशों के साथ संवाद करने में सक्षम नहीं होते, क्योंकि हमारे बीच एक भाषा अवरोध होता।
If there were no international language, we wouldn’t be able to communicate with other countries, because there would have been a language barrier among us.

Bathe (vti.) – बेद – नहाना – To take bath

कोरोना वायरस से बचने के लिए, हमें बाहर से आने के बाद अच्छे से साबुन से नहाना चाहिए।
To protect ourselves from coronavirus, we should bathe properly with a soap after we arrive from outside.
उसका निधन रहस्मयी तरीके से हुआ था जब वो बाथरूम में स्नान कर रही थी।
Her demise occurred under mysterious circumstances when she was bathing in her bathroom.

Bear (n. & v.) – बियर – भालू / सहना – Endure / Tolerate

भालू आसानी से पेड़ पर चढ़ सकता है।
A bear can easily climb on a tree.
मैं अब और दर्द सहन नहीं कर सकता।
I can’t bear the pain anymore.

Beat (v.) – बीट – हराना / धड़कना – To defeat / To pulsate

शतरंज में विश्वनाथन आनंद अक्‍सर अपने विरोधियों को हरा देते हैं।
Viswanathan Anand often beats his opponents in chess.
जब आप व्यायाम करते हैं तो आपका दिल तेज़ी से धड़कता है।
When you exercise, your heart beats faster.

Beforehand (n.) – बिफोरहैंड – समय से पहले – Before present / back / in past

हमें कोई भी काम करने के दौरान, समय से पहले ये सोच लेना चाहिए कि उसका परिणाम क्या हो सकता है।
While doing something, we should think beforehand about what its result may be.
अगर हमें समय से पहले ये पता लग जाए कि किसी को ये बीमारी है, तो उसका जीवन बचाया जा सकता है।
If we get to know beforehand that someone has this disease, then his life can be saved.

Belong (v.) – बिलॉन्ग – संबंध होना / का निवासी होना – Member / Pertain

आपका संबंध किस पार्टी से है?
Which party do you belong to?
क्या मनजीत भारत का निवासी है?
Does Manjeet belong to India? / Is Manjeet an Indian resident?

Benign (adj.) – बिनाइन – दयालु – Kind / Gentle / Civilized

हो सकता है किसी व्यक्ति का व्यवहार कठोर हो, लेकिन अंदर से वह दयालु हो।
It’s possible that a person’s behavior is harsh, but he’s benign from the inside.
हमें ग़रीबों और ज़रूरतमंदों की मदद करनी चाहिए और दयालु बनना चाहिए।
We should help the poor and needy, and become benign.

Betray (v.) – बिट्रे – धोखा देना / विश्वासघात करना / भटकाना – Cheat, Fraud, Mislead

तुमने मुझे धोखा नहीं दिया, मुझे पता है।
You didn’t betray me, I know that.
ज़िम्मेदार लोगों के भ्रामक बयानों से युवा वर्ग धोखा खा जाता है।
Youth gets betrayed by the misleading statements of responsible people.
मैं यहाँ नहीं होता, अगर आपने मुझे धोखा नहीं दिया होता।
I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t betrayed me.
एक सच्चा दोस्त आपके साथ विश्वासघात कभी नहीं करेगा।
A true friend would never betray you.

Bid (v.) – बिड – बोली लगाना, अभिवादन करना – Command / Greet

मैं इस पैन के लिए केवल रू 50 की बोली लगा सकता हूँ। इससे ज्यादा नहीं!
I can only bid Rs. 50 for this pen. No higher than this!
उसने मुझे गुड बाय कहा और चला गया।
He bade me goodbye and left.

Bitter (adj.) – बिटर – कड़वा / पीड़ादायक – Sour / Painful

करेले का स्वाद कड़वा होता है।
The bitter gourd tastes bitter.
धैर्य पीड़ादायक होता है, लेकिन इसके फल मीठे होते हैं।
Patience is bitter, but its fruits are sweet.

Blue (adj.) – ब्लू – अश्लील / नीला – Vulgar / A type of color

अश्लील फिल्में युवाओं के लिए बहुत बड़ा खतरा हैं।
Blue films are a great danger to the youth.
क्या आप जानते हैं कि आकाश का रंग नीला क्यों है?
Do you know why the color of the sky is blue?

Blunder (n.) – ब्लंडर – बड़ी भूल – Huge mistake / Moral lapse

किस्मत से, मेरी ये भूल मेरे लिए जीवन की सबसे अच्छी कारवाही बन गई।
Fortunately, this blunder of mine turned the best action of my life.
गलतियों को माफ किया जा सकता है, बड़ी भूलों को नहीं।
Mistakes can be forgiven, not blunders.

Blunt (adj.) – ब्लंट – मुँहफट / स्पष्टवादी – Obtuse / Pigheaded

वो हेरफेर नहीं करता है, वो साफ साफ बोल देता है।
He doesn’t manipulate things, he speaks blunt with everyone.
वो उन लोगों के लिए मुँहफट है, जिन्हें वो नापसंद करता है।
He is blunt to those, who he dislikes.

Bore (v.) – बोर – उबा देना/ खोदना –To annoy / To dig

हर समय अपने बारे में बात करने वाले लोग मुझे बोर करते हैं।
People who talk about themselves all the time bore me.
सड़क बनाने के लिए उन्हें पहाड़ से होकर एक सुरंग खोदनी होगी।
For making a road, they will have to bore a tunnel through the mountain.

Bother (v.) – बॉदर – परेशान करना / तंग करना – To Disturb / To irritate

मैं आपको परेशान करना बिल्कुल नहीं चाहता।
I don’t want to bother you at all.
स्टूडेंट्स ने अपने मूर्खतापूर्ण सवालों से टीचर को तंग कर दिया।
The students bothered the teacher with their silly questions.

Boycott (vt.) – बायकॉट – बहिष्कार करना – Proscribe / Estrange

भारत की आज़ादी के लिए हमारे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों ने अंग्रेज़ों के खिलाफ विदेशी सामान का बहिष्कार किया था जो कि अंग्रेज़ों के खिलाफ आंदोलन का प्रतीक था।
For India’s independence, our freedom fighters boycotted the foreign-made goods as a mark of protest against the British.
हाल ही में चीन की भारतीय-चीनी सीमा पर किये गए हमले के कारण चीनी सामान का बहिष्कार किया जा रहा है।
Recently, due to the attacks by China on the Indo-China border, Chinese goods are being boycotted.

Brave (adj.) – ब्रेव – बहादुर / साहसी – Courageous / Bold

बहादुर कप्तान ने अपने जहाज़ को बचा लिया।
The brave captain saved his ship.
भाग्य भी साहसी व्यक्तियों का साथ देता है।
Fortune also favors the brave.

Breach (v.) – ब्रीच – उल्लंघन करना – To break / To violate

मैंने कॉन्ट्रेक्ट नहीं तोड़ा।
I didn’t breach the contract.
भूल के भी कम्पनी के नियमों को मत तोड़ना।
Don’t dare to breach the company’s rules.

Break the ice (phr.) – ब्रेक दि आइस – चुप्पी तोड़ना / पहल करना – Initiate, Start

जब आप किसी अजनबी से मिलते हैं तो आपको बात शुरू करने की तरकीबें पता होनी चाहिए।
You must know the tricks to break the ice when you meet a stranger.
मुझे नहीं पता था कि कैसे चुप्पी तोड़ें और बातचीत शुरू करें।
I didn’t know how to break the ice and start a conversation.

Brief (adj.) – ब्रीफ – छोटा / संक्षिप्त विवरण – Concise / Summary

राहुल का निबंध छोटा और सटीक था।
Rahul’s essay was brief and to the point.
यह माननीय राष्‍ट्रपति महोदय के भाषण का संक्षिप्त विवरण है।
This is a brief of the speech of the honorable President.

Brilliant (adj.) – ब्रिलियंट – शानदार / बुद्धिमान – Bright / Gifted / Great

भारत में कई बुद्धिमान युवा हैं, लेकिन उन्हें सही मार्गदर्शन नहीं मिलता जिसके कारण वे अपनी मंज़िल तक नहीं पहुँच पाते।
There are so many brilliant youngsters in India, but they don’t get proper guidance, and due to that they are not able to reach their destinations.
नंबर लाने से ये साबित नहीं होता कि कोई कितना बुद्धिमान है बल्कि ऐसा सोचना बहुत ही गलत है।
By getting marks, it is not proved that someone is so brilliant; instead, it’s pretty much wrong to think that way.

Brutal (adj.) – ब्रूटल – निर्दयी – Ruthless, Violent

पुराने समय में लड़ाई के दौरान, सैनिक काफी निर्दयी रहते थे और मार – काट करने में कतराते नहीं थे।
In ancient times during wars, the soldiers used to be very brutal and didn’t hesitate to become a slaughter.
उस व्यापारी की गुंडों ने निर्दयी तरीके से हत्या कर दी थी।
That businessman was brutally murdered by the goons.

Bright (adj.) – ब्राइट – उज्ज्वल / चमकीला – Brilliant / Glittering

नेहा का मेडिकल डॉक्टर के रूप में उज्ज्वल करियर है।
Neha has a bright career as a medical doctor.
रमेश अपनी कलाकृति में चमकीले रंगों का प्रयोग करता है।
Ramesh uses bright colors in his artwork.

Bring up (phr. v.) – ब्रिंग अप – पालना, पालन पोषण करना – Breed, Rear

मेरे मामा ने तुम्हें पाला।
My maternal uncle brought you up.
मैं दिल्ली में पला बढ़ा।
I was brought up in Delhi.

Buffet (n. & v.) – बफे – खाना परोसने का एक स्टाईल / लगातार धक्के देना – A style of serving the meal / To push repeatedly

आजकल शादियों में डिनर बफे शैली में परोसा जाता है।
Nowadays, dinner is served in buffet style at weddings.
तेज़ हवाओं ने जहाज़ को लगातार धक्का देकर तट तक पहुँचा दिया।
The strong winds buffeted the ship to the shore.

Bully (n.) – बुली – धमकाना / तंग करना – Frighten / Harass
