Gender in English: Masculine, Feminine, Common & Neuter

कोई भी Noun (संज्ञा) किसी न किसी Gender (लिंग) में होता है।
There are four genders (चार Gender होते हैं) –

1. Masculine Gender (पुल्लिंग) – Denotes a male animal (पुरूष जाति का बोध कराता है।)
   Boy, Man, Brother, King, Papa, Son, Uncle, Wizard
2. Feminine Gender (स्त्रीलिंग) – Denotes a female animal (स्त्री जाति का बोध कराता है।)
   Girl, Woman, Sister, Queen, Mummy, Daughter, Aunt, Witch
3. Common Gender (उभयलिंग) – Denotes either a male or a female (या तो पुरूष या स्त्री जाति का बोध कराता है।)
   Child, Baby, Candidate, Classmate, Student, Person
4. Neuter Gender (नपुंसकलिंग) – Denotes neither a male nor a female (न पुरूष न स्त्री जाति का बोध कराता है।)
   Pencil, Plant, Pen, Bed, Kitchen, Room, Book, Mango

अगर मैं आपसे पूछूँ कि “Clever (चालाक)” किस Gender का noun है?
तो हो सकता है कि आप कह दें – सर, ये शब्द Clever न पुरूष जाति का बोध करा रहा है और न ही स्त्री जाति का, इसलिए ये Neuter Gender (नपुंसकलिंग) है।
ऐसे में आपका जवाब गलत होगा। ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि ये word (CLEVER) संज्ञा (noun) है ही नहीं, ये तो एक विशेषण (adjective) है। जैसे मैं कहूँ –

वो लड़का चालाक है। (Vo ladka chalak hai.)
That boy is clever.
या
वो लड़की चालाक है। (Vo ladki chalak hai.)
That girl is clever.

ऐसे में ये शब्द (clever) उस लड़के या लड़की की Quality के बारे में बता रहा है, इसलिए ये एक विशेषण (adjective) है।

Personification of a few nouns

कुछ ऐसे Words भी होते हैं, जिन्हें Living being की तरह Personify किया जाता है जबकि वो Nonliving होते हैं। जैसे एक English song है –
“The sun has got his hat on and he is coming out today. Now, we’ll all be happy…”

इस song में सूरज (Sun) जो कि एक Planet है, ये न male है न female है, लेकिन फिर भी इसे as a living being बताया है कि सूरज टोपी पहन रहा है।

इसी तरह, जैसे एक sentence है –
“India is a country. She is very rich in culture.”

India के लिए She (pronoun) का use किया है जबकि India कोई living being नहीं है लेकिन फिर भी इसे “as a living being” personify किया गया है।

आइए, कुछ Masculine के Feminine counterpart को देखते हैं –

Masculine – Feminine
Lion – Lioness
Actor – Actress
Prince – Princess
Tiger – Tigress
Waiter – Waitress
Hero – Heroine
Boy – Girl
Brother – Sister
Husband – Wife
Bachelor – Spinster
Horse – Mare
Bull – Cow
Cock – Hen
Nephew – Niece
Sir – Madam
Son – Daughter
Father – Mother
Grandfather – Grandmother
Landlord – Landlady
Peacock – Peahen

Answer

• “Cousin” may refer to a brother or a sister; hence, it’s in common gender.
• “Hope” denotes neither male nor female, so it’s in the neuter gender.
